Two main pairs of arteries supply the brain - the two internal carotid arteries and the two vertebral arteries.
The internal carotid artery supplies the front area.
Obstruction of the right carotid artery causes weakness and loss of sensation on the left side of the body (one side of the brain connects with the opposite side of the body).
The internal carotid artery divides into an anterior and middle cerebral artery.
A catheter (injection tube) threaded retrograde up the right brachial artery to the subclavian artery at the level of the right vertebral artery can be used to release contrast material that will enter both the right vertebral and right carotid arteries, thereby demonstrating the front and back cerebral circulations (Fig. 9).
